4-year-old girl dies after choking at S. Side beach
Authorities say a young Chicago girl who was rescued last week while choking at a South Side beach has died.
The Cook County medical examiner's office says 4-year-old Marianna Carabez was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn Saturday evening.
The girl had been in critical condition since Chicago Fire Department emergency personnel responded to the beach house at Calumet Beach on Tuesday evening and found the girl was in cardiac arrest after choking.
Police say Marianna was sitting on the beach when a wave came up and knocked her into the water. Her father was helped by bystanders to pull her our of the water.
Paramedics first thought she might have been a drowning victim, but later said she choked.
