Former Kmart coming down:

The vacant Kmart building in Wheeling will be demolished within the next 45 days, according to Wheeling officials. The store at tje northeast corner of Dundee and Elmhurst roads has been vacant since 2002 when Kmart closed stores while going through a bankruptcy reorganization.

Illinois Brass Band in concert:

The Illinois Brass Band will perform in concert 7-8:30 p.m. today, June 25, at Harmony Park, Vail and Campbell streets in downtown Arlington Heights. Founded in 1991, the band plays 15-20 concerts each year and has won six North American Brass Band Association championships and competed at the British Open. The concert is free; bring lawn chairs or blankets.

District 59 OKs additions:

Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 school board this week agreed to move forward with an estimated $9 million in classroom and other additions at three of the district's 14 buildings. The school district will start accepting bids for a roughly $3.6 million project to build eight new classrooms, a new storage area and relocate restrooms at Juliette Low School in Arlington Heights. The school is expected to be severely overcrowded next year with a projected enrollment of 397 students, up from 366. Over the past two years, preschool and English as a second language programs have been moved elsewhere. The target for completion is before the 2010-2011 school year. Improvements also are planned at Rupley Elementary School and Ridge Family Center for Learning.

Bring food to Palatine parade:

Not only will Santa Claus serve as Grand Marshall of the Palatine Jaycees' 4th of July Parade, he'll be helping collect food and financial donations for Palatine Township's food pantry. The township is encouraging spectators to bring a can of food or donate a dollar while watching.

Des Plaines concerts begin:

Des Plaines' Friday Night Live On Metro Square concert series kicks off with the first performance from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 26. Performsers are 6:30 p.m., Lynette's School of Dance; 7:20 p.m. Mystery Talent; 8 p.m., Rolling Thunder. Performances also will be held July 17 and July 31 in Metro Square, behind the Des Plaines Theater between Lee and Pearson streets. For information, call (847) 922-0556.
