N. Chicago cop accused of pistol-whipping Waukegan police chief

A North Chicago police officer has been charged with aggravated battery after officials say he attacked Waukegan Police Chief Artis Yancey.

Lake County State's Attorney Michael Waller said Carl Sain, 45, was released from custody Monday after posting $7,500 for bond.

Waller said Sain went to visit his estranged wife at her residence in Waukegan on June 17.

Sain rang the doorbell at the woman's residence several times, Waller said, and when he was not admitted he broke down the door.

Yancey, who was appointed chief in Waukegan in March when former chief William Biang retired, was inside the woman's residence at the time, Waller said.

Sain attacked Yancey, Waller said, and left Yancey with several bone fractures in his face.

Yancey has undergone surgery for his injuries but is not currently hospitalized.

Both the North Chicago and Waukegan police departments declined to comment on the incident Monday.

Sain is eligible for a sentence of up to seven years in prison if convicted, but would also be eligible for probation.

He is due to appear in court again Wednesday.
