Concrete truck rolls over in Gurnee
The eastbound ramp of Route 120 in Gurnee was closed for about three hours Monday morning after a truck hauling wet cement flipped onto its side, police said.
David Winn, 53, of Grayslake was trying to turn the truck at a high rate of speed from Milwaukee Avenue, Gurnee Deputy Chief Kevin Woodside said, and lost control halfway through the turn, rolled into the ditch, and flipped onto its side just after 7:40 a.m.
The cement was contained inside the truck, but workers called in four tow trucks that worked to quickly get the semi upright and the drum moving to ensure the wet cement did not dry inside, Woodside said.
"That would have been really bad if it hardened inside," he said. "But, they got it moving and the cement stayed wet."
Winn was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was treated and released, Woodside said.
Winn was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Woodside said.
