Larkin dismisses Hight as basketball coach

Larry Hight has been dismissed as boys basketball coach at Larkin High School, he said Thursday afternoon.

"I've been fired," Hight said just hours after meeting with Larkin's administration. "I was given the option to resign and I said no."

Hight, who is also a guidance counselor and head softball coach at the school, was Larkin's varsity basketball coach for two seasons. His first team went 1-25 but the Royals improved to 8-20 this past season.

"I was in it for the long haul," Hight said. "I had no intentions in giving up on this job or this program."

Hight said he felt the move was driven by upset parents and booster club members.

"I don't like to be fired by the booster club and that's the problem," he said. "There are people making decisions who don't know anything about basketball and that's the problem."

Larkin administrators could not be reached for comment Thursday night.
