Plenty of top-notch fun here in 'burbs

At last summer has arrived, and we are all emerging from our cozy, suburban caves in search of sunshine and entertainment. It's the perfect time to enjoy the myriad festivals, concerts, exhibits and plays offered in our talent-rich neighborhoods.

Whatever our passions, we are sure to find something to engage our interest during these bountiful summer months. Arts and crafts, music, local cuisine, live performances - all these attractions and more await the fortunate suburb-dweller. So what if gas prices are rising and our funds are limited? These events are often free or very affordable, and finding amusement in our own locales keeps the driving costs to a minimum.

Take this example: a few short weeks ago the well-received comedy "Don't Dress for Dinner" completed a highly successful run at the Royal George Theater in Chicago. If we wanted to see that production we would have paid premium admission and parking fees and endured the grueling journey downtown.

This month, however, we can enjoy a new production of the same play, for little cost and no hassle, at Summer Place Theatre in the Naperville Central Auditorium. Check it out at www.summerplacetheatre.org.

C'mon, let's support our local talent and our community celebrations: dance to the music, admire the art, savor the food and laugh at the repartee - all in our own back yard.
