View sounds racist if you turn it around

President Obama has nominated a liberal judge, Sonia Sotomayor, to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court.

Senate Democrats will, of course, vote in lock-step for her confirmation. And Republicans who harbor serious concerns about her record have been served notice: Criticize her or her record and your views will be dismissed as racist and/or sexist.

This despite her unabashed observation that "a wise Latina woman . . . would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male . . ." Obama assures us that her statement has been taken out of context and that she didn't really mean it. OK. Turn it around. Create a context in which this would be acceptable: "A wise white man ... would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a Latina woman... "

It can't be done. It's racist. Period.

It's sexist. Period.

Ditto Sotomayor's statement.

United States senators are afraid to openly criticize an appointee to high office for fear of retribution. They have to "temper" their words; "tone down" their concerns. It's getting scary, folks. Is that the Thought Police tapping at our door?
