Carpentersville man charged with sixth DUI

A repeat DUI offender from Carpentersville remained behind bars Monday after police arrested him on his sixth such offense.

Donald R. Ellinger, 50, of the 1200 block of Brookdale Drive, was charged this morning with driving under the influence, which for him is a Class X felony, driving with a revoked license, which in this case is a Class 4 felony, improper lane usage and driving without insurance, petty offenses, punishable by fines.

Court documents said Ellinger had five DUIs in the past and that his license had been revoked eight times.

Kane County Judge John Noverini set his bond at 10 percent on $100,000. Ellinger, unable to post, was taken to the Kane County jail.

Documents said that at around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, police pulled Ellinger over on Route 25 at Besinger Drive when his vehicle swerved over the center line.

Ellinger, who admitted to getting into an accident earlier in the night, refused all field sobriety tests and declined to give a breath sample - he told police he had consumed two beers, documents said.

His next court date is June 25 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

Ellinger faces up to 30 years in prison, if convicted of the Class X felony charge.
