Fisherman rescues 5-year-old girl from lake
BRIGHTON -- Police in the southwestern Illinois town of Brighton are hailing 59-year-old Terry Buhs as a hero for his rescue of a 5-year-old girl from a small lake.
Buhs was fishing near his home shortly after dawn Saturday when he glanced across Briarwood Lake to the homes on the other side and saw a young girl wandering alone. When she disappeared, Buhs drove around the lake for a closer look.
When he got to the other side of the lake, Buhs saw the girl floating face down in the water about seven feet from a dock. He dived in and pulled her out. The girl's eyes were open but she was not breathing, so Buhs immediately began administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. By the time emergency workers arrived, the girl was breathing normally.
