Downstate man killed in motel fire identified

GALESBURG -- Galesburg Police have identified a man who died in a fatal fire at a local motel.

Police reports indicate the body from the fire early Friday morning was that of 47-year old Jeffrey D. Shaw.

Police officials listed Shaw's address as the EconoInn where the fire occurred, but there were unconfirmed reports that he was from Monmouth.

The fire forced the evacuation of 17 rooms at the motel and severely damaged almost its entire second floor.

Authorities say the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
