Company alleges Chinese software has stolen code

SAN FRANCISCO -- A California company claims the Internet-filtering software China has mandated for all new personal computers sold there contains stolen programming code.

Solid Oak Software of Santa Barbara says parts of its filtering software, which is designed for parents, are being used in the software slated to roll out in computers in China next month.

China wants the software to block violence and pornography, but critics say it censors many more things.

Solid Oak's founder, Brian Milburn, says he plans to seek an injunction against the Chinese developer that built the software. A phone number for that developer could not immediately be located.

A report Thursday from University of Michigan researchers on the Chinese software supports Solid Oak's claim.
