Summer concert series starts up in Carol Stream
A '50s rock show will launch a summer of weekly entertainment tonight in Carol Stream.
Every year for 12 years, the village's summer concert series has featured musicians selected with input from residents on the types of music they like to hear.
"We try to not feature just one type of music," said Chris Oakley, assistant to the village manager. "I think it appeals to everyone."
The village has achieved that goal this year, with everything from an Elton John tribute band to a big band orchestra set to perform at Town Center, 1021 Fountain View Drive.
For the first time, the concert series will have a doo-wop group called The Bronx Wanderers.
"It acknowledges that there is a diverse taste of music in town," Oakley said.
Some favorites will also return, such as Tony Spavone, a local restaurant owner who has been singing in town for at least seven years.
He'll take on songs by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Tony Bennett at the classic car show that also benefits Toys for Tots.
The summer series also will feature plenty of music from the '50s and '60s to help celebrate the village's 50th anniversary.
The Meteors will open the series tonight with '50s rock, and the tradition will continue with Terry Lee Rock-a-Boogie Band in July and The Legendary Crown Vics, who will close out the summer on Aug. 20.
The weekly concerts also feature a different restaurant from town, giving residents a chance to sample food from various locations.
Oakley said the concerts have become pretty popular, with dozens of residents heading to Town Center every week.
"If we had the weather, we had the people," he said.
