New Avon Twp. supervisor says much to be done

New Avon Township Supervisor Sam Yingling says he's trying to correct a variety of problems he's found since taking over last month, ranging from an ant infestation in his office to some employees being unclear about their daily duties.

Yingling touched on what he said is the job confronting him at Monday night's town board meeting.

As part of his report to the trustees, Yingling said he's found some Avon Township employees in the supervisor's office were not given clear direction on their responsibilities. He said he's now holding staff meetings so everyone is on the same page.

He also said he's found office workers' computer skills lacking, through no fault of their own. For example, said Yingling, the employees should be skilled in basics such as Microsoft Office and Word.

"We have a really good staff in place," Yingling said Tuesday. "They haven't been given the (training) tools."

Concerns about Avon Township's finances were voiced by Trustee Sherry Ridge. She said she's been poring over financial documents from the past five years and could not find evidence of an emergency fund.

Officials also said an inventory-control system for the township's food pantry should be explored. Yingling said private donors provide the food, but it's not known what is coming in or being distributed in the volunteer operation.

Meanwhile, Yingling said there are several problems with Avon Township's headquarters on Washington Street in Round Lake Park.

Yingling said ants have infested the supervisor's office, which also has been deemed to have hazardous track lighting. The township building also has old hot water tanks that should be replaced before they fail, he said.
