Arlington Hts. giving local streets facelifts, or more

The good news is that streets are being resurfaced, reconstructed and rehabilitated in Arlington Heights.

But that means you might want to avoid certain streets this summer, and if you live on one of them it could mean hiking a ways to your house.

The village board has contracted with Arrow Road Construction of Mount Prospect to do $5.6 million in road work.

Resurfacing funds totaling $3.3 million will come mostly from the village general fund. Reconstruction and rehabilitation money, $2.3 million, will come from motor fuel taxes.

Resurfacing involves grinding the surface of the road and applying new asphalt. Occasional curbs and sidewalks might be replaced.

Rehabilitation, lasting 8-10 weeks, means all curbs and gutters are replaced; all driveway aprons are replaced because grade changes may be required; the street is resurfaced and some sidewalks and drainage is repaired.

Reconstruction, lasting 10-12 weeks, is much the same as rehabilitation, but it also includes removing the street down to the soil and replacing it with asphalt.

When driveway aprons are replaced the contractor has 15 working days to make residents' driveways usable again.

The rehab projects are:

• Rockwell Street: Will be rehabbed and widened from Lincoln Lane to Dryden Place.

• Beverly Lane: Rehabilitated from Fairview Street to Mayfair Road.

• Lincoln Lane: Rehabbed from Fairview Street to Rockwell Street.

The following streets will be reconstructed:

• Hintz Road from Rand Road to Kennicott Avenue.

• Huntington Drive, a horseshoe-shaped street that intersects twice with Windsor Drive.

• Lillian Lane from Stratford Road to Waterman Road.

• Noyes Street from Kaspar Avenue to Harvard Avenue.

• Canterbury Court from Raleigh Street to the cul-de-sac.

• Techny Road from Kennicott Avenue to Ridge Avenue.
