Cut spending, don't raid taxpayer coffers

In response to Melissa Meighen's May 26 letter on raising the state income tax, it's great to see that socialism is alive and well in her world.

The notion that government just can't cut spending is what has gotten the U.S. into the situation it is in now. I would ask, "Do you cut spending when you don't have funds to pay your bills?" Undoubtedly, the answer is yes you do, and it's now time for governments all across the U.S. to do the same. Additionally, the notion that we must raise the state income tax is complete lunacy. Raising taxes in tough economic times is precisely the wrong measure to take; ask California, New York or New Jersey how they are doing after their rounds of tax hikes.

Finally, when people mention an opportunity to restore balance and equity to a system, that is nothing more than code speak for wealth transfer from those who are productive, take risks, and succeed to those that wait for handouts. If increasing taxes to replenish the state coffers is so urgent and important, as Ms. Meighen writes, I am more than willing for her to step up and pay my incremental tax due if this ridiculous measure passes in Springfield.

I urge Governor Quinn and the legislature to for once, do the right thing, make the tough choices, and approach the state budget as if it was your home budget - cut spending and do not act like you have a bottomless piggy bank at your disposal to bail you out when you go on a spending binge.
