Three indicted in murder of 12-year-old

Three people were indicted on arson and murder charges Wednesday in a Mundelein fire that killed a 12-year-old boy in May.

Edwin Hernandez, 17, of the 800 block of Lange Street in Mundelein; Elver Hernandez, 20, of the same address; and Manuel Flores, 25, of the 24000 block of West Brorson Avenue in Round Lake Beach, were all indicted on six counts of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated arson, which carries six to 30 years in prison.

The prosecution is seeking a term of not less than 60 years and not more than 100 years in prison on the murder charges.

The early morning fire on May 9 gutted the Mundelein home on Prospect Avenue and left Jorge Juarez dead of smoke inhalation. It also injured his mother and two sisters.

Police have said that the three men were involved in a conflict with Jorge's 18-year-old brother. They threw a Molotov cocktail through the window of the home, authorities said.

Police reports show that the family moved from Grayslake to get away from gang members who followed them to Mundelein.

The next court date for the three is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 11 in Waukegan. All three are being held without bond.
