Contreras to start Monday
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen doesn't need to worry about anything right now, but he's going to have an extra starting pitcher on Monday.
Jose Contreras is coming up from Class AAA Charlotte to start one of the day-night doubleheader games against the Tigers on Monday.
Guillen said Contreras, 3-1 with a 2.70 in 5 starts with Charlotte, is going to remain with the Sox after his start.
Guillen also sounded like up-and-down Bartolo Colon (3-5, 3.75 ERA) is not heading to the bullpen.
"We've got plenty of time," Guillen said. "We'll talk about it and see whether (Contreras) is going to start the first game or the second game. After we start him, we'll see what moves we've got to make. The move we've got to make, I don't think is a tough move. We've got to make a move, we've got to make a move. The thing is, how are we going to handle Jose after he comes in?"
The Sox could use Contreras out of the bullpen after Monday, or they could put Clayton Richard back in a relief role.
Weather or not: Manager Ozzie Guillen has a theory on why the White Sox were hitting .220 at home and .281 on the road heading into Wednesday's game against the A's.
"We hate coming here and playing," Guillen said. "Every time we come here it's like 30 degrees colder. It's windy, it's raining, rain delays. Just name it, we had it. I don't know. Hopefully, in the summer we're better. In the past we hit better. Maybe one year we hit better on the road than we hit here. But since I've been managing this ballclub, we always are a pretty good hitting club when we play at home."
Happy tune: Wes Whisler made his major-league debut Tuesday, pitching 1 scoreless inning. The left-hander had 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.
The Sox selected Whisler, 26, in the second round of the 2004 draft.
"I felt good," Whisler said. "I was just trying to come in and help the team either way. We were down, but you still don't want to give up any more runs. It was fun to get in there and not make a mess of anything, to go out there, get ahead of guys and make quality pitches."
Around the horn: Brian Anderson left Wednesday's game in the fourth inning after feeling lightheaded. The outfielder has been battling a virus. ... Designated for assignment last week, catcher Corky Miller cleared waivers and was outrighted to Class AAA Charlotte.
