Services set for St. Charles man killed in motorcycle accident

For Michael S. Smith, life was about friends and family.

The construction truck driver from St. Charles loved to help others and hang out with his family, said his daughter, Nicole Smith.

"A lot of people knew him as having a heart of gold," she said.

Smith, 40, died Friday night after his motorcycle crashed on Route 64 in Campton Hills.

He was fond of working on his house, Nicole Smith said. And if anybody needed help, they could count on Smith. "It was not a matter of 'yes' or 'no,' but 'where?' and 'when?' " she said.

He enjoyed vacationing in the winter in Lakeland, Fla., where his parents, grandmother and several siblings had moved, and had recently bought a house there. He was also a fan of stock car racing, and liked to attend the Bike Week motorcycle rally in Daytona, Fla.

He and his wife, Theresa, were married for five years and together for 23 years. He was due to become a grandfather in November. She will tell her baby "how loving and how caring that he was," Nicole Smith said.

A wake for Smith will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles. The funeral is at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and burial is in North Cemetery in St. Charles.

He is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Mary Smith; his maternal grandmother, Barbara Jankovic; brothers Bob, Kenneth, Keith and Terry; sisters Nancy Meadows and Susan Notte; and several nieces and nephews.

Meanwhile, Campton Hills police have found the second motorcyclist witnesses saw driving away from the scene Friday night.

The man has been interviewed, Campton Hills Police Chief Greg Anderson said. No criminal charges have been filed against the second cyclist.

Anderson expects it might be several weeks before the investigation is finished. He said the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team is still processing evidence.
