Naperville man admits having child porn

A Naperville man has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

Thomas Schmitz, 50, agreed to plead guilty at a hearing Tuesday in DuPage County.

He will be sentenced July 30. He has already agreed to a 30-month probation stint and will have to register as a sex offender as well, a spokesman for DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett said.

Prosecutors will seek at least six months of jail at his sentencing, but a judge will make a final determination.

Schmitz was a photographer by trade, but was not accused of creating the images.

Contractors repairing Schmitz's fire-damaged apartment tipped off police when they discovered images of young girls on the computer at the apartment. Investigators spent a year sifting through the evidence before charging Schmitz. Naperville police said at the time the investigation took so long because of the volume of images being reviewed.
