Elgin Lions Club names new president
The Elgin Lions Club has chosen a new slate of officers for this year.
The incoming president is Edward Bates, who will be installed at the meeting of the Elgin Lions Club Tuesday, June 2, at the Holiday Inn in Elgin. He was chosen by unanimous ballot and brings a good deal of experience to the position. He has served as secretary of the club for the last four years.
Bates is originally from northern Illinois, but his 34 years in retail management has taken him many miles from his native home. Currently, he has chosen a new career as an educator. He has a master's degree in education and teaches history in local colleges. He is also a doctoral candidate at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. His wife, Irma, is the incoming principal at the Sunny Hill School in Carpentersville.
When he isn't teaching, studying, or collecting for the various Lions Club fundraisers, he is running. He took part in this spring's Boston Marathon and will run in the New York Marathon this fall.
Of course, he did not neglect Elgin's own Fox Trot that was run on Memorial Day.
