Goodman wrong on Powell, Specter
Ellen Goodman's feeble attempt to castigate Republicans for defending human life resembles a comedy routine, as does her tortured "logic" concerning the "defection" of Colin Powell and Arlen Specter.
To be clear, both men were always supporters of abortion on demand (the amoral litmus test of the ultra liberal). However, Powell's recent criticism of Republican policy has virtually nothing to do with his ongoing support of abortion (even though his lack of concern that abortion rates among black women is nearly triple that of white women is tragic).
As for Arlen Specter, it is abundantly clear that his unprincipled return to the Democratic party was nothing more than a desperate move to keep his Senate seat, rather than some imagined ideological awakening.
Perhaps, Ms. Goodman is unaware that nearly 60 percent of Americans oppose unlimited abortion on demand, according to recent polls. In fact, the only significant support for abortion involves cases of incest, rape or serious threat to a women's health (less than 8 percent of all abortions).
God help the Democratic party if it truly believes that the casual destruction of 1.2 million human lives each year is a constitutional right that must be supported and promoted. Or that the pain suffered by the innocent, unborn during an abortion is not torture, but waterboarding of a terrorist is.
