Police: Would-be candy store burglar foiled

Antioch police have credited a man walking his dog with a sweet save in foiling a burglar on a crime spree whose next target was a candy store.

Nathan Roed, 25, of the 400 block of Maplewood Drive in Antioch, was seen around 12:15 a.m. Thursday pounding on a door of the Something Sweet candy store at 891 Main St., police said.

The witness called police, and Roed fled when they arrived, authorities said. The witness was still in the area and was walking his dog when he again saw Roed and attempted to detain him. Roed escaped the witness, but police caught up with him a block away.

Police said Roed also burglarized Flo's Hair Care at 945 Main St. and The Cigarette Depot at 391 Lake St. and took an undetermined amount of money plus several lottery tickets.

Roed was charged with two counts of felony burglary, punishable by up to seven years in prison. He was also charged with felony possession of burglary tools, aggravated assault, battery, resisting a peace officer and attempted burglary. Roed appeared in Lake County court, and his bond was set at $100,000.
