Palatine gets jump on farmers market season
While most area farmers markets won't get underway until June, Palatine is gearing up to host its fifth of the season.
The Palatine Farmers Market officially opened its 18th season on May 2. It will continue from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through fall at the train station, located at Smith and Wood streets.
Early produce includes strawberries, asparagus, rhubarb, mushrooms and lettuce. Hanging baskets and potted herbs are plentiful and new fruits and veggies will be added each week.
On May 30, there will be a special emphasis on Irish heritage. The McNulty Irish Dancers will perform at 10 a.m., along with traditional Irish music by Palatine's own Mike O'Regan and Karen Reshkin.
New this summer is sustainable farmer Peter Grubbe, who brings organic produce from his Illinois farm. And in response to a noted shortage of sweets, the farmers market is welcoming Nick Addante of High Rise Bakery and caterer David Esau with specialty breads and baked goods. Chef Lisa Bellan of Feast of Eden will sell her signature cheesecakes.
Other items include spices, olives, pickles, tea, pasta, soups, sauces and nuts. Pottery, flowers and environmentally friendly soaps, cleaners, lip balm and bug repellent will be on hand. And Ron Lester, known for his bison steaks, has branched out with cheese, beef, chicken and shellfish.
