Sports, rec fest in Carol Stream
The Carol Stream Park District will show off its programs and showcase a dozen others for residents this weekend at its JustPlay event.
The district is expecting about 5,000 participants at the free sports and recreation festival, which runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at the Carol Stream Town Center.
"It's not the first time they're doing it, but it's the first time it's going to be such a large event," said Ian Everett, spokesman for the park district. "The event isn't just for Carol Stream. We're going to be attracting people from the surrounding neighborhoods as well."
It will feature 100 events and sports activities, such as Eurobungy, which involves bungy cords and trampolines, Chicago Storm soccer clinics and performances by the Jesse White Tumblers. Food vendors will also be on hand.
The district decided to organize the event to give families a cheap alternative during the summer.
"This is the only event of its kind in the Western suburbs," Everett said.
Free workshops will be provided on activities such as geocaching, gardening and camping. Experts on golf, baseball and volleyball also will be available to give out tips.
"It's just to get families to start off the summer being active, being outdoors," Everett said.
The Town Center is located on the corner of Lies Road and Gary Avenue. For information on JustPlay, visit justplay2009.com.
Meanwhile, the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association will have a 5K run at 9 a.m. the same day.
The registration for the 5K Run, Rock and Roll is available through WDSRA at wdsra.com/5k.html.
A skateboarding competition also is scheduled across the street at Hampe Park.
The first competition of its kind in Carol Stream will include a beginner's round at 11 a.m. and an intermediate round at 2:30 p.m. Registration will take place the day of the event.
