NW Symphony plays Williams, Dvorak
The Northwest Symphony Orchestra closes out the 2008-09 season with a Family Pops concert, 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at Maine West High School, Oakton Street and Wolf Road, Des Plaines.
The program features cellist Allan Steele, winner of the Paul Vermel Young Artist award, playing Dvorak's Cello Concerto. Other pieces on the program are Offenbach's "Ballet Parisien," and a medley of John Williams' favorites: Highlights from "E.T." and three pieces from "Schindler's List."
A preconcert commentary begins one hour before the concert in Room A-201. General admission: $20; seniors $15; students $10. Children under 14 free with an adult. northwestsymphony.org.
Long Grove goes pink for research
Long Grove will host the third annual Long Grove Goes Pink day on Saturday, May 30, to benefit the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Activities begin with a welcoming ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Towner Green. Participating stores will be decorated with pink balloons, and offer special promotions to shoppers who visit on that day. Additionally, shoppers will be encouraged to donate to the Avon walk and will receive additional 10 percent off coupons for each donation made. There will be live music at Beans & Leaves Coffee and Tea Cafe, pink popcorn at the Long Grove Popcorn Shoppe, as well as many other promotions. Raffle tables will also be strategically placed around the town.
Clearbrook hosts charity golf outing
On Tuesday, June 9, Clearbrook will partner with its PAL (Partners in Adult Learning) program to host a charity golf outing at Old Orchard Country Club, 700 W. Rand Road, in Mount Prospect. Highlights are an 18-hole scramble, beer and cigar holes, live and silent auctions, and a helicopter ball drop for the grand prize of $1,000.
Shotgun start is at 11 a.m. Lunch, dinner, prizes and open bar are included with registration; cost per player is $195. Tickets for the helicopter ball drop can be purchased for $20 each or three for $50.
The PAL Program is a partnership between Clearbrook, Northwest Special Recreation Association, Community Alternatives Unlimited and families of young adults over the age of 18 with developmental disabilities and physical challenges who have graduated out of the school system.
