Royals manager suspended for 1 game

NEW YORK -- Kansas City Royals manager Trey Hillman was suspended for Wednesday's game against Detroit, two days after he was ejected during a game against the Tigers.

Hillman was tossed by plate umpire Paul Emmel during the eighth inning of Monday's 13-1 loss when he came out to argue after a called third strike against Willie Bloomquist, a pitch Bloomquist thought was low.

Hillman also was fined by Bob Watson, baseball's vice president for discipline, who called the manager's actions "inappropriate."

The ejection was the fourth of Hillman's career and first this season. Bench coach John Gibbons managed the team Wednesday against Detroit.
