Health officials urge West Nile virus precautions

SPRINGFIELD -- Health officials say it's time to think about preventing West Nile virus by reducing the mosquito population.

West Nile is transmitted by mosquitoes that pick up the infection from birds. Symptoms include body aches, fever and headache.

Last year, the virus caused 44 U.S. deaths, including one in Illinois.

Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so it's important for homeowners to keep roof gutters clean and change water in bird baths.

You can lessen your chance of mosquito bites by limiting outdoor activities in the early morning and at dusk when mosquitoes are active.

Illinois has set aside nearly $3 million this year to help local agencies track West Nile and kill mosquito larvae in storm drains.
