Wise going to AAA to get timing back

Injured outfielder Dewayne Wise is headed for Class AAA Charlotte on Monday to begin a rehabilitation assignment.

It figures to be an extended stint.

"Obviously, he hasn't played in a while and he needs to get his timing, not only offensively but defensively," said acting manager Joey Cora. "He's going to stay until he feels comfortable playing. It isn't going to be one or two days, I can guarantee you that."

Wise, the White Sox' opening-day starter in center field, separated his right shoulder while making a diving catch at Detroit on April 13.

The 31-year-old journeyman is going to take his time getting back up to speed.

"I'll probably just work out with (Charlotte on Monday) and start playing Tuesday," Wise said. "The first game, I will probably DH. The second day, I'm just playing five innings in center. The third game, full-go."

The Sox just got Brian Anderson (oblique) back from injury, and Carlos Quentin (sore left foot) is also getting healthier.

When he is ready to come off the disabled list, Wise might have to stay with Charlotte and wait for his chance.

"People here have been doing a good job," Cora said. "(Wise) was doing very well until he got hurt. But he needs to be healthy. It's too bad he got hurt because he was starting to play really, really well. We wonder what would have been with him in the lineup every day."

Take a break: After playing in every game this season except for two straight in early May, right fielder Jermaine Dye got a breather Sunday.

Dye sat out May 3-4 after being hit by a pitch on the left hand.

Now that Carlos Quentin and Brian Anderson are healthy, the time was right to give Dye a day off.

"J.D. needs a break," Joey Cora said. "We've been trying to find a way to give him a break. We didn't have too many outfield options before."

Cora opted not to pinch hit Dye in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday, when closer Matt Capps struck out Carlos Quentin, Brian Anderson and Chris Getz to preserve the Pirates' 4-3 win.

See you on the Coast: Manager Ozzie Guillen was hoping to be back with the White Sox Sunday, but he'll meet up with the team in Anaheim, Calif.

Guillen flew to Venezuela after Friday's game against the Pirates to be with his ailing father-in-law.
