One-sided press presents unfair view
We would like to revisit the Notre Dame controversy. We watched the news coverage and read the Herald's article recounting Obama's commencement address at Notre Dame. We were there. The media almost totally omitted an important part of the day.
In addition to the vocal demonstrators, there were about 300 peaceful. protesters (parents, students, alumni and friends) on campus in the South Quad led by the Notre Dame Response student group.
There was a beautiful mass followed by a rally with many prominent speakers including Bishop D'Arcy, other professors or alumni of the University who embrace Notre Dame's Catholic identity, and Chris Godfrey (Life Athletes) who was the starting offensive guard for Super Bowl XXI Champion New York Giants. Additionally about 20 courageous seniors skipped their graduation and, instead, attended a rosary with their parents in the grotto led by Fr. Frank Pavone (Priests for Life).
Although these positive things occurred, the only media coverage consisted of Obama's speech, three protesters that were thrown out, those that were arrested and about five seconds of a senior who attended "an alternative graduation". Even though several news stations were at the rally and rosary, why is it that only the negative made the news?
Is it because the pro-Obama bias that existed during the campaign continues? After the election political analyst Pat Caddell. said in an interview, "There is one institution in America which has no checks and balances," "and that is the press..." "but when (the media) ... becomes a partisan outrider... essentially (deciding) who should be president; what truth people should not know; then what they become, what they constitute, is a threat to democracy."
Are we going to let the mainstream media dictate to us what we should and shouldn't know?
