Improve treatment of brain disorders

May is Mental Health month. It's time for us to improve the way treatment is provided.

Each day we read articles telling us of local tragedies caused by mentally ill persons. However, we should question why this happens. Does it have to be this way? The answer is a resounding "no!" This occurs because the mentally ill are not being treated. Recognizing, diagnosing, and treating symptoms of brain disorders before they become tragic is the beginning of the solution. Brain disorders are chronic illnesses which can be effectively treated, not unlike diabetes, or other physical illnesses.

The media, our legislators, judicial system and medical professionals need more awareness of their responsibility to recognize and educate the public about mental illness.

It has been shown that with proper treatment, supportive housing, and adequate funding lives and money would be saved. The waste of taxpayer's money and the lack of care of the mentally ill is a crime. You can change this by contacting your Representative to support and co-sponsor House Bill SJR31.

Let's step up to the plate and make Illinois a state of which to be proud. Act now and write to your Representative. Go to il.gov for contact information
