Shedd's Oceanarium ready to open

CHICAGO -- Renovations at the popular Oceanarium in Chicago are done.

The section of the Shedd Aquarium is set to open Saturday after nine months of renovation work. That work included resealing the surfaces of pools housing whales and dolphins.

New exhibits include the Polar Play Zone and the Grainger Beluga Encounter Habitat.

During the renovation work, the beluga whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins and other animals were sent to locations around the country. They returned to Chicago earlier this month.

The 170,000-square-foot Oceanarium was opened in April 1991.
