No injuries in Round Lake Beach fire
About 50 Round Lake Beach seniors are safe after a fire broke out Thursday at Beach Haven Towers on Golfview Road.
Deputy Chief John Whitten of the Round Lake Area Fire Protection District said a small fire started in one of the second-floor apartments at the senior complex at about 8 a.m. Thursday.
He said residents remained in their homes while the fire was extinguished, then everyone was ushered to a meeting room to ensure they were safe.
"The housing complex was designed so that, if a fire were to break out, it would be confined to one apartment and the remaining residents would remain safe in their rooms," he said. "So, after the fire was put out, we evacuated everyone and made sure everyone was OK."
He said several residents were treated at the scene and released, adding only one resident was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He said that person has since been treated and released.
Whitten said the resident of the apartment where the fire started is temporarily displaced, but the Lake County Housing Authority is setting the resident up in another location until she can return to her apartment.
He said the cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimate was available.
