Suburban cop wounded in chase of robbery suspects

A Calumet City police officer has been shot and wounded during the highway pursuit of three men accused of robbing a bank.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Juan Valenzuela says portions of the Bishop Ford Freeway closed Tuesday afternoon as authorities searched a wooded area along the expressway for the suspects.

Authorities say two men are in custody and the officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Valenzuela says police pursued the men onto the freeway after they allegedly robbed a Citibank branch in a Calumet City mall. The vehicle the men were in crashed, and the suspects fled on foot.

After the men left the vehicle, they exchanged gunfire with police, wounding one officer.

Valenzuela didn't know the wounded officer's condition.
