Hornbeck still unbeaten as Cougars take 3-1 win

DAVENPORT, Iowa - Ben Hornbeck pitched seven innings of one-run ball Sunday afternoon and struck out a career-best 10, as the Kane County Cougars knocked off the Quad Cities River Bandits, 3-1, in front of 3,487 fans at Modern Woodmen Park.

The four-game set is now even at one win apiece, and the Cougars are a season-high 10 games over .500 for the second time.

Hornbeck (4-0) posted his second straight quality start. He gave up 1 run, 3 hits, and 1 walk to go with his 10 strikeouts, the most by a Cougar since April of last season. Hornbeck now has 47 strikeouts and 19 hits allowed in 36 1/3 innings.

The Cougars tied the game in the fifth. Grant Desme doubled and later scored on a Jeremy Barfield grounder. Then in the eighth inning, Mitch LeVier doubled home Juan Nunez with two outs to break the tie, and Matt Ray followed with an RBI single for a 3-1 game.

Scott Deal worked the final two innings and gave up 1 hit for his second save. Andres Rosales (2-2) took the loss for Quad Cities.

The Cougars (23-13) and River Bandits (19-16) continue their series Monday at 11 a.m. when Kenny Smalley (4-1, 2.05) will oppose Arquimedes Nieto (1-2, 2.84).
