ECC won't challenge for JuCo World Series

For the first time in six years, the NJCAA World Series will be sans Elgin Community College.

Kankakee ended ECC's season Sunday with a 12-8 win over the Spartans in the championship game of the Region IV baseball tournament in Freeport.

"It just wasn't meant to be I guess," said ECC coach Bill Angelo, whose team finished the season 38-18. "It's disappointing because we've gotten so used to be being there. But we're still proud of our season. The guys did a great job. Kankakee is a good team and we wish them the best in the national tournament."

The Spartans fell behind 5-0 after two innings Sunday and could never recover.

"We had to play catchup and we just ran out of time," Angelo said.

Greg Stolzenburg had a 2-run triple for the Spartans, and Angelo lauded the play of shortstop Cory Hodge, who didn't have an error in the tournament and who came up with several big hits.
