Batavia woman charged after crashing car onto Naperville beach

A Batavia woman faces a litany of charges after crashing a vehicle through a chain-link fence at Centennial Beach in Naperville early Saturday morning.

Naperville police say Abbey L. Potter, 24, of the 1200 block of Crestview Drive, drove a silver 2004 Hyundai Sonata through the fence surrounding the manmade beach at 500 Jackson Ave. Potter knocked over a large section of the 7-foot-tall chain link fence and a fire hydrant before coming to rest in the sand about 500 feet from the damaged fence, police said. Potter, who was not injured in the accident, was attempting to drive the vehicle out of the sand when police arrived. The crash happened about 1:15 a.m.

Police said Potter's blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit of .08. She was charged with two counts of driving under the influence, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, expired registration, and driving on the sidewalk.

Naperville Park District Police were called in to help remove the car.
