FBI seeks Sugar Grove bomber

FBI agents announced Thursday a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a bomber who targeted a switching shed along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad this week near Sugar Grove.

The explosion happened early Tuesday inside a "concrete bungalow building" that contained electronic components of rail switches, authorities said. Investigators believe the damage was caused by a pipe bomb dropped through a rooftop air vent.

The blast disrupted rail services, delaying both freight and passenger train traffic for several hours. No one was hurt.

"While no injuries or loss of life resulted from this incident, the bombing was certainly an intentional act and will be aggressively investigated by the FBI," Robert D. Grant, special agent in charge of the Chicago FBI office, said in a news release.

The FBI said bomb fragments were recovered at the scene and Kane County sheriff's officials are assisting in the investigation.

Police said such an offense is punishable by up to 20 years under the Federal Train Wreck statute, which sets stiff penalties for intentionally damaging tracks, switches and other railway infrastructure.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the FBI at (312) 421-6700 or a railway tip line at (800) 832-5452.
