Elgin felon convicted of gun charge

A felon from Elgin pleaded guilty to a weapon charge and was sentenced to six years in prison, officials said Thursday.

Francisco Suarez, 21, of the 400 block of Ann Street, was convicted of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and was sentenced Wednesday under a plea deal accepted by Kane County Judge T. Jordan Gallagher.

Prosecutors said Suarez threw a .22-caliber gun from the driver's side window of his 1998 Ford Explorer about 4 a.m. Oct. 25, 2008, as Elgin police pulled him over for driving without headlights.

Under Illinois statute, Suarez must serve at least three years. He was given credit for 201 days served in the county jail since his arrest.
