NU student has swine flu, but school won't close

Northwestern University health officials say a student has a confirmed case of swine flu.

Officials announced Thursday that the sick undergraduate student has returned home and is recovering without complications.

The university is following federal guidelines for dealing with the virus and does not plan to close.

The student will be allowed to return to the Evanston campus 24 hours after she no longer has symptoms, or seven days after the illness began, whichever is longer.

The school is notifying students who share the same residence as the ill undergrad.

The state of Illinois has confirmed 618 cases of swine flu. Most of the cases are in and around Chicago.
