Letter to president of Notre Dame
Dear Rev. John I. Jenkins,
I have been a Catholic my whole life (70 years) and very proud of my faith. I am proud of the academic achievements of Notre Dame and love sports and have followed them my whole life. ND has always made me feel good and connected in the way that we were all Catholic and headed in the same direction.
I am very disappointed in you for inviting President Obama to be a commencement speaker and receive an honorary degree from your prestigious university. Your position as president of Notre Dame is to strive for unity among Catholics, and you are trying to divide us by sending the message to your young men and women that abortion, the taking of millions of unborn innocent lives, is sanctioned by you and Notre Dame University. What kind of example are you showing our young people when you honor someone who acts in defiance of our moral principles?
I applaud former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, Mary Ann Glendon, for declining your invitation to speak as the recipient of the Laetare Medal. She feels the same way I do about President Obama's conflict with Catholic teaching on abortion.
