Man sentenced for South Elgin High brawl

A Chicago man who was involved in a large brawl outside South Elgin High School last year pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony mob action and was put on 18 months of probation.

Robert Peoples, 19, also was ordered to perform 30 hours of community service, pay fines and costs totaling $1,010 and avoid contact with several other people also involved in the fight.

The negotiated plea, which also prohibits Peoples from entering the high school property again, was accepted by Kane County Circuit Judge James C. Hallock.

Peoples was one of three teens arrested after the fight, which erupted about 9:15 p.m. Dec. 11, 2008, after a basketball game between South Elgin and Larkin high schools.

Authorities and school officials have said the brawl involved more than a dozen people and may have started over pizza.

Also charged was Justin Wilkes, 17, of Chicago, and Hakeim A. Johnson, 17, of South Elgin.

Wilkens pleaded guilty to mob action in April and also was put on 18 months probation and sentenced to 30 hours of community service. Johnson is scheduled to appear May 20 before Judge T. Jordan Gallagher.
