Aurora mom injured in Mother's Day fire
An early morning fire on Mother's Day not only injured an Aurora mom, but left her and her adult son homeless, authorities said.
At 9:56 a.m. Sunday, firefighters were dispatched to the city's southeast side for a fire on the 600 block of Hinman Street.
The fire started in the living room when a piece of burning incense spread to a large, artificial house plant made of silk, Aurora Battalion Chief Ed Oros said. The fire then spread to the dining room.
The mother sustained minor burns to the left side of her face and left shoulder when she grabbed the plant and tried dragging it to water, Oros said.
She was being treated at Rush Copley Memorial Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, he said.
It took Aurora firefighters 10 minutes to bring the blaze under control, but not before it caused extensive smoke and heat damage to the one-story house.
There were no smoke detectors, Oros said.
The flames left the house uninhabitable, causing $130,000 worth of damage, Oros said.
The mother and her son are now staying with relatives and are making arrangements with the Red Cross for clothes and long-term shelter, Oros said.
