Storms shorten bass tourney debut
A round of thunderstorms followed by high winds shortened the schedule for the first IHSA bass fishing state tournament at Carlyle Lake on Friday.
Boats competed between 7 and about 10:20 a.m. before they were called back due to threatening weather.
In that short span, St. Charles North took command, thanks partly to a 4-pound, 11-ounce fish caught by Derek Hoffman. That was the largest individual fish of the day and helped the North Stars take the overall weight lead at 10.5 pounds.
Hoffman and teammates Ryan Fosbinder and Cody Hansen boated five fish for a total weight of 10.5 pounds. Moline is in second place at 8.13 pounds and Woodlawn is third at 7.63 pounds.
Maine West competitors Creighton Delgato, James Ramirez and Anthony Zourkas are in 11th place with a total of two fish boated and a total weight of 2.13 pounds.
Marmion's all-freshman team of Casey Smith, David Thielen and Brad Warland landed one fish at 1.13 pounds, which put the Cadets in 16th place.
A total of 20 boats landed fish; 32 boats came up emtpy.
The bass fishing tournament is the first of its kind in the nation.
The tournament is scheduled to resume at 7 a.m. and continue through 3 p.m.
A weigh-in presentation begins at 3:15 p.m. and the awards presentation starts at 4:30 p.m.
