Warning issued on swift moving Fox River after three rescued

Rescue officials are warning people to stay away from the Fox River after three people were rescued from swift moving currents late Thursday near Batavia.

Batavia Fire Battalion Chief Randy Banker said two 17-year-old girls were playing on the shores of the river near Clark Island when one of the 17-year-olds slipped into the water.

Banker said the second teen tried to pull the first girl out of the water, but she also slipped and was pulled into the water by the friend.

He said the swift moving current swept the two girls away from shore quickly, and their calls for help drew the attention of an adult male, who came over to help.

Banker said the adult dove into the river to try and swim the girls back to shore, but he was also swept away by the swift currents of the swollen river.

He said the teens and the adult did eventually make it back to shore prior to the Batavia Rescue dive team arriving on the scene.

He said the adult male was hit by large debris in the water, and suffered some minor injuries, but he refused hospital transport. The two teens were unharmed, he added.

"The river is closed right now due to those swift currents that are very unsafe," he said. "People should stay away from the shores of the river because of this exact situation."
