Palatine police probe attempted kidnapping

Palatine police are investigating reports that a man attempted to abduct a 13-year-old girl Wednesday night as she walked home from her aunt's house.

The incident happened around 8:35 p.m. on the 1100 block of East Dundee Road in front of a fast-food restaurant.

Police said a man driving a black SUV pulled up to the girl and tried to start a conversation. When the victim tried to walk away, the suspect got out of the vehicle and grabbed her arm. The girl was able to break free of his grasp and flee. She saw the suspect again driving southbound on the 1700 block of North Rand Road.

The suspect is described as a 50-year-old Hispanic male, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds, with gray short cropped hair and green eyes. He was wearing a tan polo shirt and black trousers. The victim also told police she smelled a strong odor of cologne on the suspect, and that he spoke to her in Spanish.

The suspect's vehicle is described as a black SUV, possibly a Jeep Cherokee, with a gray stripe along the entire bottom.
