Boy escapes attempted abduction in Bensenville

A 10-year-old boy was able to escape after a man attempted to abduct him at a Bensenville bus stop early Thursday, authorities said.

The 10-year-old Johnson Elementary School student was waiting for the bus about 7:45 a.m. at the corner of York Road and Wood Street, Bensenville police said.

A man approached him from behind, grabbed the boy's backpack and attempted to pull him away from the school bus stop, police said.

The boy was able to break free and run away, according to police reports.

The abductor was last seen running southbound on York Road. He's described as a male Hispanic, about 30 years old, 5 feet, 6 inches tall, about 160 pounds and of medium build. He has short, black hair and was wearing jeans and a gray hooded sweatshirt.

Benesenville Elementary District 2 parents were notified by letter of the event and advised to speak to their children about what to do when approached by a stranger. In that letter, Superintendent William Jordan said the boy initially ran back to his home and saw the man about 50 yards away a few minutes later. The man also showed him some money, according to the letter.

The village also will have additional patrols near the schools in town, police said.

Bensenville officials mentioned there was another incident in which a 12-year-old girl was approached by a 25-year-old man. Details were not immediately available, but police arrested the man in that case, according to officials.

Anyone with information about the attempted abduction should call Bensenville police at (630) 350-3455.
