Teens accused in Round Lake Park shooting

Two teenagers remain in the Lake County jail following a shooting near a busy Round Lake Park intersection that resulted in two stray bullets striking a resident's home, authorities said.

Round Lake Park Police Chief George Filenko said a running dispute between two groups of young men led up to the incident that occurred about 6:50 p.m. Sunday near Grandview Avenue and Washington Street. No one was injured.

Police said triggerman Kyle S. Carter, 17, of the 38000 block of North Sheridan Road, Beach Park, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, mob action, unlawful use of weapon, aggravated unlawful use of weapon and possession of ammunition without a valid firearm owners identification card. He's being held in lieu of $500,000 bond at the Lake County jail.

Jerry D. Lapenta, 17, of the 500 block of Hillcrest Terrace in Round Lake Park, remained in the county jail late Wednesday on a $20,000 bond. He was charged with mob action.

Another suspect charged with mob action, 17-year-old Mario Aguirre of the 600 block of Oakwood Drive in Round Lake Beach, was freed from the jail after posting 10 percent of a $10,000 bond.

Filenko said Carter fired at least four shots from a semiautomatic handgun at two men standing near Grandview and Washington. He said the victims told officers summoned to the scene the suspects fled north of Washington Street.

One of the officers ran north, tracked the suspects to Lapenta's home and watched them enter an outside crawl space when backup squad cars arrived.

Filenko said the chrome semiautomatic weapon was recovered when the teenagers were arrested.

Round Lake Park investigators later found two rounds lodged in a home near Grandview and Washington. Cops also recovered shell casings in the area, said the chief, but have yet to find the other stray bullets.

"There's vehicles going up and down Washington," Filenko said. "Any one of those bullets could have struck a vehicle."

Both targeted men have been part of a yearlong feud with Carter and his associates, police said. The problems developed after an exchange of words and shoving at village park, Filenko said.
