McCann may have only 1 day to test glasses
ATLANTA -- Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann may have only one day to prove he'll be ready to come off the disabled list on Friday.
McCann, who has been on the disabled list since April 25 while seeking an answer for his blurred vision, expects to test new sports glasses when he plays a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.
He was scheduled to play with Gwinnett on Wednesday also, but the sports glasses were missing a lens when they arrived Tuesday. McCann said he expects the replacement in time for Thursday's contest.
McCann was with Gwinnett on Wednesday but only planned to take batting practice.
If all goes well with the new glasses, McCann plans to join the Braves for the start of a weekend series at Philadelphia on Friday, the first day he is eligible to come off the disabled list.
When asked Tuesday if he has any concerns about being able to catch and hit with the new glasses, McCann said "No, I think I'm good."
The decision to wear glasses came after a failed experiment with contact lenses. He has never worn glasses while playing.
He has said laser surgery would be the next option if he can't play while wearing glasses.
McCann wore regular prescription glasses while taking batting practice this week, and he has a new hockey goalie styled catcher's mask he believes will be more comfortable with glasses.
McCann hit .301 with 23 homers and 87 RBIs last season, when he won his second Silver Slugger Award and made the NL All-Star team.
