Girl hurt after being ejected from ATV

A 14-year-old Wadsworth girl is in critical condition after being ejected from an ATV she was driving, Lake County Sheriff's police said.

The girl and her 11-year-old step brother were driving ATVs around 5:52 p.m. Tuesday on the 15000 block of W. 21st Street when the two vehicles made contact with one another, ejecting both riders to the pavement while the vehicles rolled over, officials said. Both children were wearing helmets but police are investigating whether the helmets were strapped at the time. The 11-year-old girl was airlifted to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where she was in critical condition with head trauma late Tuesday, police said. The boy was treated for minor scratches and scrapes but was otherwise unharmed, police said.

Lake County Sheriff's police are investigating.
