Man shot in Lake County 'road rage' incident in Gurnee
Police are searching for the driver of a white BMW who they say, in a fit of road rage, shot and injured a person in Gurnee late Monday night.
Master Sgt. Carlita Joe of the Illinois State Police said the offender's car and the victims' car collided while heading west on Grand Avenue at about 9:55 p.m. Gurnee police Cmdr. Jay Patrick said the accident took place on Grand Avenue near Dilleys Road.
Joe said the victims' car received a flat tire in the collision, and the driver and passenger pulled over onto the northbound I-94 ramp to change the flat.
She said the driver and the passenger were out of the car when the BMW arrived at the ramp. She said the BMW sped up and hit the passenger, then the driver of the BMW fired a small caliber handgun at the passenger.
The passenger was shot in the torso twice, Joe said.
Police are trying to determine if the driver of the BMW climbed out of the car when firing the pistol, or if the offender rolled down the driver's-side window and fired at the victim.
Joe said the offender fled, heading northbound on I-94.
The driver of the red car, who was crouched near the vehicle, was not injured in the confrontation and called police, Joe said.
The victim was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Joe said.
Police are searching for the offender as well as two other occupants of the BMW.
She added officials from the Illinois State Police continue to investigate the incident.
